Worker killed and another injured as mining truck reverses over vehicle at Peak Downs mine in Queensland
2026-10-10
A worker wearing a blue helmet and yellow cap lamps was killed and another seriously injured when a mining truck collided with another vehicle at a central Queesland coal mine.
A large mining truck reversed over a light vehicle at BMA’s Peak Downs mine in Moranbah, with emergency services called to the scene about 4.38am on Friday.
Queensland Police said one man died at the scene.
Another man, who was trapped by his lower leg, was freed by rescue crews before being rushed to Moranbah Hospital in a stable condition, Queensland Ambulance Service said.
BMA confirmed the incident and said operations had been suspended across all of its sites for 24 hours.
“This is a devastating tragedy which will be felt across BMA, BHP and the entire resources sector. We are providing support to the families and loved ones involved,” a spokesperson said.
“BMA has ceased operations across all our sites for 24 hours to support authorities and enable our people to reflect and refocus on safe ways of working.
“We are working closely with emergency services and Resources Health and Safety Queensland.”
Resources Health and Safety Queensland CEO Claire Cooper said investigators and coal inspectors had been deployed to the site and would work closely with police and emergency services.
“Our thoughts are with the worker’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” she said.
Queensland Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dale Last said details surrounding the incident were “still coming to hand”.
“I have been advised that a worker at Peak Downs mine has lost their life and another has been seriously injured,” he said.
“Details are still coming to hand, but my thoughts are with the friends, work mates, family of those involved, and the emergency services who attended — everyone deserves to go to work and come home safely.”
The Peak Downs coal mine is operated by BMA, a joint venture between BHP and Mitsubishi Development.
Two other workers have previously died at the Peak Downs mine — Peter Reynolds in 1986 and Athol Parry in 1974.
Friday’s incident brings the number of fatalities in Queensland’s mining industry to 25 since 2016.

Agile Mining Services: Fresh blow in mine crisis as dozens of contractors lose jobs
2026-10-10
More than 200 workers from the iron ore mine have been stood down
The fallout from a major South Australian mine closure has worsened, with dozens of contractors now also facing job losses alongside hundreds of mine workers.Hundreds of mining headlamps were left on the mine
More than 200 workers from the high-quality iron ore mine arrived back in Adelaide on Thursday, greeted by emotional family members after being stood down with little notice.
The workers boarded coaches in Coober Pedy on Thursday morning for the long journey to Adelaide, arriving at Agile Mining Services headquarters at Parkside.
It has been a day of tearful goodbyes after a whirlwind 24 hours for staff affected by news that the mine will be all but abandoned.
Staff say management told them at a meeting that negotiations with the mine’s Chinese backer, the YG Group, had fallen through over claims of tens of millions in unpaid debt.
“We’ve got the meeting, sort of seen it on the news. We just got told we stood down and until further notice, take annual leave until we hear back,” worker Scott said.
Sources within the Agile Group have revealed up to 50 contractors have also been blindsided by the news.
Buzzard Mine is currently the only mine in South Australia to use the Horizon rail line for its mineral exports. It is also a key exporter from the Whyalla port.
Sources say there is enough iron ore to sustain the port in the short term, but the long-term future remains uncertain.
The state government says it is monitoring negotiations between Agile Mining and the YG Group, hoping to restart the mine it says is commercially viable.

‘One spark can kill’: Watchdog warns over risks of rise in contraband in coal mines
2026-09-11
Six incidents in recent months have heightened concerns with calls for closer scrutiny.
Queensland's mine safety watchdog has sounded the alarm after a spike in dangerous contraband — including vapes — being taken underground at coal mines, warning that even a single spark could trigger a deadly explosion.
Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) confirmed six contraband incidents across different underground coal mines in the past five months.
Two involved workers who don’t wear mining lamps allegedly using vapes underground — a sharp jump after more than a decade without a single reported case.
Chief Inspector of Coal Mines Jacques le Roux says the trend is deeply concerning, given the risks posed by ignition sources in methanerich environments.
“One spark can kill,” he said.
“Underground coal mines may contain methane gas and combustible coal dust. Any ignition source can trigger a fire or explosion.”
The regulator has issued a statewide safety alert, reminding workers that vapes, ecigarettes, lighters, matches, smoking materials, mobile phones, smart watches, digital watches, electronic car keys and any device capable of creating a flame, spark or arc are banned underground.
Testing by RSHQ’s scientific arm, SIMTARS, shows vapes can reach more than 250C, with damaged or overheating devices capable of generating more than 100 times the energy needed to ignite gas in an underground mine.
SIMTARS executive director Kerri Melkersson says many workers underestimate the danger.
“Many think ‘it’s only a vape’ but the dangers are very real,” she said.
RSHQ is urging workers to check pockets and bags before going underground and calling on mine operators to tighten search procedures and review contraband controls.
Investigations into the recent incidents are ongoing.
